Like most of you, I worked as an HVAC technician and got that... well itch, or entrepreneurial seizure to go out on my own. I was thinking... If I’m going to work all these hours... be on call 24/7 for "them" while they make all the money, why don’t I work those hours for myself, make their money AND have time for myself?
So I took my first call on 9/11/01 (Yes THAT 9/11) . Things quickly got busy and I found myself working almost 24/7 only this time it was for myself. The more I worked, the more I made But did I?
Great! I just traded a job for a J.O.B - Just Over Broke. If I didn’t work we didn’t get paid. So every time there was something for the kids at school, I had to “fit” it in the schedule. I was on the verge of feeling frustrated, almost resenting the fact that I “had” to go to the kids events (fortunately I have an amazing wife who kept me from going down THAT road). Don’t get me wrong, I love my kids and I loved supporting them a ton, but there was always that pesky thought in the back of my head (It’s like the little devil on one shoulder, and the angel on the other? Well the devil was louder) that said... “You know Steve, if we were at this call, or doing that call we would have the money and the time to go to the shore for a week. I was tired, I was frustrated, I was overwhelmed, and to top it all off I was stressed. Stressed to the point where I gained almost 50lbs.
If there was going to be a change, it had to be me. I HAD to change, since I was the problem, I was also the solution.
I reached out to a coach and we started to make some changes. Some subtle, some drastic. Those changes proved to be monumental. Not only was I able to get my life back and take a some family vacations - fully paid ahead of time (and the
occasional Disney trip - not cheap) along with bing able to take just my wife and I away. I was able to pay off all my debts but my house, and was turning a “true” profit (no more “reinvesting the profit”). The Stress of running the business fell off, unfortunately the weight didn’t just fall off, but I did loose almost all of it though. Where does that bring me to today. Well, I was able to sell my company. I now have the freedom to do what I want to do, when I want to do it.
And what I want to do is to share with you that there is a better way. You CAN have the profits and the time you thought you would have when you started your business. When I stopped guessing at what to do, and started scaling my company things became simpler. I want you to do the same. I want you to experience the freedom of owning your own business.
